The H Directorate strives to nurture the leadership culture and training continuum to support succession planning throughout the Auxiliary. Let's Roll. It is composed of nine divisions and thirty one branches, each of which provides specialty services to the National Staff Directorate, Membership, and Coast Guard. Free member training in boating skills and leadership. Provide Radio communications and watch standing at Station Oak Island. Perform maintenance for Station Oak Island grounds and equipment. Sea Operations training. Participate in on-the-water patrols related to; Assist in Search and Rescue, Safety of local waterways, Environmental protection, Homeland Security, Inspection and verification of Aids to Navigation, Safety assistance during Regattas and other events.

For many Coast Guard units, the FSs have little time for much aside from their primary duties as cooks. Due to their demanding rotation as duty cooks, it can be difficult for them to pick up additional training and collateral duties such as becoming boarding team members.

With two or three cooks at a unit, when one takes a vacation, the others have to step up to fill in. Through this program, auxiliarists are trained to perform the duties of Coast Guard food service specialists. With this training, they cater events such as changes of command and they fill in for cooks in need. There are only two FSs at the station, and the leave he requested conflicted with his duty rotation.

As an auxiliarist, Ellis wanted to help the Coast Guard in any way that he could.
