I use my smart phone, with a front windshield mount, and get free GPS navigation as much as I want, using the google navigator or any one of the myriad navigation programs for Android. Why anyone would pay for a GPS unit on its own is silly to me, but I understand not everyone has smart phones. Still, hundreds of dollars to do the data upgrade? For instance, I drove to Chicago a couple of weeks ago; when I got downtown my GPS went screwy and it showed my position as being 2 miles from where I was actually at.
Thus it was useless other than being able to pull over and use it like a paper map what intersection are we at dear? I was getting the "" error last night, but not getting it this morning. I guess I will try again over the weekend and see what happens. I downloaded on and it took 12 hours on a sprint 3g network. About 8 hours into the download I was tired of waiting and just out of boredum I clicked on the pause button. Restarted in about 30 seconds and download speed improved greatly.

Looks like you were there one day to soon and got the January map update instead of the new April map update. One day to early. Who would have guessed they would update on the 8th instead of the 1st of April?

I downloaded the yesterday took about 50 minutes and it would not install.
I called Support and he said they had a problem they were working on and it should be up today. About nine thirty this morning I tried again and it installed cleanly in less than a half hour. I have never heard of an update that took less than 1. The download was about minutes. The installation after extraction took the balance of time.
I just bought a garmin The first version came out in April version Garmin releases map updates up to 4 times a year, so the next version is expected soon. You might want to wait a little while to download until the new version is out. The nuMaps gaurantee gives you 60 days to update maps on a new Garmin, but you can only update one time. My came today, and I am in the process of running the free update.

AR, If the places you normally travel or expect to visit are established without a lot of new roads then there's really little need to update. More important to me than roads is updated points of interest. Many businesses come and go over time and new maps keep you up to date on them.
I'll wait and see if there are substantial improvement from other users' reviews. Depending upon your actual download speed, you can expect it to be hours. Never tried the MapSource thing. If I came across an unexpected mini-roundabout or toll road, I figured out a way to get to my destination. In any case, this was a very rare event. Do you notice changes to the roads you drive on? Maybe you live in a modern housing development where new roads and roundabouts have been recently added.

David O. I have had a tomtom one for a few years now and wanted to update but after reading the comments I will leave well alone and maybe buy a new satnav instead.
I bought a new TomTom when mine went missing and a friend forgot to say it had turned up in his car. I use both, keeping one on charge in the boot. The new TomTom is better but I have never got lost when using the old one. Many people are happily using built-in satnavs that are years old because the updating cost is ridiculous.
On the other hand, new satnavs are more affordable than they used to be. Decided to stick with version. This avoids running my phone battery down and gets me most of the way to most places. Map updates are far too expensive. Sat Nav companies must be under pressure now. I bought a Garmin nuvi 66 mid range with Lifetime maps — it is ideal — and seems to update maps quite often.
No problems yet. By contrast I have bought a new car 3 year old with a built in satnav. The device is good to use — and I value the integration with the car systems — it turns the radio down when it is giving road directions. I propose to do it once as the maps are WAY out of date and complete business parks do not appear in the post code database.
