Focusing on both straight up races and crash junctions, it makes good use of its gameplay modes by giving you many different ways in which to compete. From the racing end of things, each of their many modes is well built, played out on massive tracks, with a new boosting system that rewards you for taking risks, but is focused primarily on the takedown, wrecking your opponent's car. Crashing too has changed. Instead of the thirty or so junctions of old, you've now got one hundred.
Instead of the sweet spot that you had to aim for previously, this time you've got the ability to go into 'aftertouch' once you've crashed, and miraculously steer your car while it's crashing, all to the effect of getting precious score multipliers, cash bonuses, and crashbreaker explosions that rip everything up.
It's a very different experience, as it's nowhere near as organic, but in the end, it makes for much more even multiplayer, as no one can pull that far ahead too easily. On the negative, Burnout 3: Takedown's primary weakness is a rubberband AI that is too unintelligent to compete with you on the track, so it's given a teleporting ability that keeps it within six seconds of being behind you.
However, to balance that, splash in a bit of Xbox Live support, and you've probably got the coolest multiplayer racing game ever made. In the end, I say it's a great title worth purchasing if you're playing alone, or with friends. Burnout Paradise is a racing video game. The sound that plays when you are taken to the garage to view your newly unlocked car cuts off two seconds in. The actual sound clip is about twice as long.
A gold medal, but with the shape of a car engraved onto it instead of a tick. There are no corresponding silver or bronze versions of this icon, suggesting it was a placeholder.
Interestingly, the European and Japanese release has a lower quality version of this graphic. A very low-res question mark. Would have been used to show an event had not been finished. The art style of this image is very different to that of the actual game. Was used for a game mechanic called 'Driving Skills' that was eventually replaced by the Takedown Trophies.
Concept art used for another game mechanic called 'Aggressive Skills', which was also replaced by the Takedown Trophies. Settling the Score is an aspect first introduced in the Xbox version of Burnout Revenge. Settling the Score is where a player has taken down a rival that has been marked for Revenge.
When a score is settled then neither player will be marked for revenge. The amount of times a score has been settled is shown to the player at the beginning of each event as long as there is a rivalry to show. This aspect returned in Burnout Paradise but can only be viewed during Online Races and Freeburn Online Session that don't have a challenge activated.
It is when a rival's car gets tagged during the Crash in Burnout Revenge. No bonuses are awarded for this type of takedown. It's all about revenge! A "Takedown Streak" is where a player earns a takedown within 10 seconds of each other. Takedown Streaks vary between games. The highest a Streak could go in Burnout 3 and Burnout Dominator is 5 takedowns while the highest in Burnout Paradise is Burnout Wiki Explore.
