Home Regulations. Building Regulations For chimney Installations Any work that affects an existing chimney including installation of a stove or flue liner or creates a new chimney is considered building work and so comes under the Building Regulations. Planning permission Is not normally required. Do I need to line my existing chimney?
Chimney design rules The minimum chimney height recommended for minimum performance of wood burning and multi fuel appliances is 4. In case of 4 bends; a sweep door in between the 2 outer bends is required. Flue sizes Most solid fuel appliances in the UK have either a 5" mm or 6" mm flue outlet on the top or rear of the appliance.
What other people are saying about us: " Very good price! Edwards - Birmingham. How can we improve this page? Standard components support the system and take you through floors and ceilings.
Our AKW twin wall flue is what is called an "open ended" system: the lengths push and then clip together with the insulation inside one part touching the next forming a continuous shroud of insulation all the way up. The weight of the flue system must be supported either by a floor support, roof support or wall support.
When attaching the flue to the support make sure that the support component takes the weight, not the stove. You may have to raise the flue up a little when fixing the support component.
There should be some type of fixing every mm. The fixing can be a wall band or wall fixing bracket to prevent lateral movement or one of the load bearing supports as above. The flue must be at least 50mm from combustible surfaces, so any holes in combustible floors etc must be cut mm larger in diameter than the external diameter of the flue. Thus you should cut a mm diameter hole for mm double skin flue. Where single skin flue pipe is used from the stove which then changes to twin wall below the ceiling, the changeover point should be at least mm below the ceiling.
Single skin flue pipe should be at least 3 times its diameter away from combustible materials ie mm pipe should be mm from combustible materials. Building Regs do not specify clearances for the stove itself and manufacturers recommendations vary greatly. As a general rule maintain at least mm from non-combustible surfaces and at least mm from combustible surfaces.
Note that adjustable parts are provided with extra insulation for inside the twin wall as when you extend a part you create a cavity within the part. The offset to clear the eaves may or may not be required depending on the severity of your eaves. The two elbows at eaves height are 45 degrees 15 degree and 30 degree elbows are also available and we have a short length mm of twin wall pipe between them due to the depth of these eaves.
Note that I could also have used a mm or even a mm between the two elbows. One can then just twist the bottom elbow to bring the upper vertical section back to close to the eaves looking at the house end on you would then see a dog leg to the right or left if you twist the other way.
I used to be the same. Running a twin wall chimney up through the property and out of the roof is standard practice and quite straightforward. Please watch the video earlier in this article as it includes important information on bends and sweep points etc. Of course, the first two points may not be relevant as some properties will have vaulted ceilings or be single storey with no upper floor or loft space.
I say not but you can add more if you wish not often possible if the flue is not near anything to bracket to of course. Because in open-vaulted properties where a stove is in the middle of the room there are often no brackets between the stove and the ceiling.
Stovefitter's office is an old Chapel and the only two brackets are in the ceiling void some 5 metres above the stove. The chimney is strong. If passing through a floor from room to room you will chose a Ventilated Support Unit pictured. This allows ventilation into the floor void and comprises three parts:. Obviously your joists might not be conveniently spaced.
Note that when looking up at the ceiling of the lower room you will be able to see through the vents into the void. It is possible to hide this using a Masking Plate which just clips on few people bother. If you are passing through a ceiling into a loft with no floor surface exposed beams then you do not need to ventilate.
On the ceiling you would choose a Finishing plate. If you are passing through a weather surface roof tiles, felt, plastic etc.
EDPM moulds to surfaces surprisingly well. Can be bonded using silicon adhesive. For additional security add roofing screws or stainless steel bolts. Many of our customers have just used silicon adhesive. Going out through the roof is often more straightforward than it sounds and the only difficult bit is fitting the roof flashing on a tiled roof.
If you are happy with a bit of roofing then you might wish to do it yourself. If you have two ceilings to pass through then you will likely want to position your stove directly underneath the gap between the lower ceiling joists.
Note that if you have four bends in your system you MUST have a sweep point on one of the bends or on a straight between the bends. If you look at the image of our office it is not this tidy - this was moments before we moved into it you can see two chimneys. The chimney at the rear is single-skin Vitreous pipe for the first metre and a half, changing to twin wall just before half height. The chimney in the foreground is "twin wall all the way to the stove". But only use Vitreous pipe in your system if the twin wall is bracketed securely at least two brackets more than a metre apart.
Vitreous pipe has no locking mechanism - one part slides into another about 2cm depth. No jointing compound, no clamp. That chimney at the rear in our office was "wobbly" because the twin wall is only located once at roof height. Since this picture was taken an extra bracket has been fitted and all is well. The stove in the foreground could not have been fitted using Vitreous pipe for the lower section because there was nowhere to bracket the twin wall to and make it strong.

Flue sizes. Most solid fuel appliances in the UK have either a 5" mm or 6" mm flue outlet on the top or rear of the appliance. You will normally then use the corresponding sized vitreous enamel flue pipe for the first section of flue from the stove to take you into the chimney.
From that point you will then usually have to change to a minimum 6" mm flexible chimney liner or rigid insulated flue system. If you order a flexible liner kit or full twinwall flue system from us it will come with the suitable adaptor to connect to the 5" or 6" enamel pipe.
That applies to most solid fuel appliances. They can legally be used with a 5" chimney liner or full flue system as they produce less smoke particles than other stoves. How high does the flue have to go? When installing a new twinwall flue system, if the flue exits the roof within mm horizontally from the ridge high point of the roof then the flue must extend a minimum of mm above the ridge.
If the flue exits the roof further down then it must extend high enough to achieve 2. That height will be determined by the pitch angle of your roof. We can work out the height required when we design your system. If unsure, please give us a call. For buildings with combustible roofs e.
